Doki Doki Literature Club! is split up into four different acts. The first act starts as a traditional visual novel, while the later acts start including horror elements. Each act has a code that prevents the player from reusing a previous save file to return to these previous acts.[1]

Story

Act 1

Day 1

A boy and his childhood friend, Sayori, are walking towards school when the latter asks if he has joined a school club yet. He states he is uninterested in joining new clubs, much to Sayori's dismay. After the school day, the protagonist thinks about joining a club to satisfy Sayori, initially considering the anime club. Sayori, however, suggests he join the Literature Club, where she is Vice President, previously telling them that she is bringing in a new member and even telling Natsuki to make cupcakes. The protagonist decides to stop by, specifically for the cupcakes. He eventually visits the club to see Yuri, Natsuki, and Monika. He learns that Yuri and Natsuki have written their poems, impressing him. Monika then suggests that everyone go home and write poems to share with the rest of the club. The protagonist states that he did not say he was joining the club, causing all four girls to frown. Out of respect, he then states that he is joining the club, and all go home to write their poems.

Day 2

The protagonist returns to the Literature Club and meets Monika, followed by Yuri, Natsuki, and Sayori. Yuri pulls out Portrait of Markov for the protagonist to read in case they both want to discuss it. After everyone shares their poems, Natsuki and Yuri argue about their writing styles. The protagonist either sides with Natsuki or Yuri or gets help from Sayori. They eventually return home to write their following poems.

Day 3

The protagonist meets Sayori, who asks her to buy a snack. The protagonist asks to see what is in her purse, revealing that she has two coins to buy a snack, which makes Sayori feel guilty. Natsuki then throws a cookie at Sayori's face while she tells everyone about tricking Natsuki into making cupcakes. Sayori eats her cookie and sees Natsuki's, asking for a bite, to which Natsuki refuses. Seemingly coming across as agreeable, Sayori pretends to hug Natsuki and takes a bite out of Natsuki's cookie, much to the amusement of the protagonist and Yuri. The rest of the club notices Monika is not in the classroom yet, with Sayori speculating that Monika has a boyfriend. Monika soon arrives and admits she is late due to practicing piano for study hall and not hearing the bell.

Day 4

Excusive routes

If the player picks out the words the girl likes the most during the poem minigame, they will get exclusive scenes with that girl. In the event of a tie, Yuri takes the highest priority, followed by Natsuki and Sayori.[1]

Sayori route
First scene

Sayori and Monika discuss what to do about the upcoming festival while the protagonist listens to them. He eventually falls asleep, only for Sayori to wake him up. The protagonist notices Sayori's unkempt appearance, including her unbuttoned blazer. He attempts to help her, including buttoning up her blazer, which no longer fits her. She then unbuttons her blazer for comfort. Monika returns to let everyone share their poems.

Natsuki route
First scene

The protagonist visits Natsuki, who is searching in the closest place for her box set of the manga series Parfait Girls, which Monika never puts in the right spot. The protagonist initially dismisses the series until Natsuki suggests reading it together, sitting against the wall beneath the windowsills. He learns that Natsuki could not get her friends to read manga there, which frustrates her. He also learns a bit about her father, with Natsuki being nervous about his reaction if he found out about her reading Parfait Girls. Natsuki becomes more energetic as the protagonist keeps reading the manga, only for Monika to interrupt them so they can share poems.

Yuri route

The protagonist visits Yuri at her desk, who is reading Portrait of Markov. The protagonist asks why she bought two copies of the book, to which she nervously replies that she just happened to buy two of them. She and the protagonist begin to read the book together at each other's desk. While reading the story, the protagonist mentions how the main character reminds him of Yuri, which upsets her. Monika returns and tells everyone to share their poems.
